After the 1906 earthquake and fire, wealthy San Franciscans migrated south along the Peninsula to escape the city. Though the Peninsula seemed more insulated from earthquakes, the Bourns went on to build their new house 200 yards away from the San Andreas fault. The historically accurate interiors of Filoli complement the stunning exterior and gardens of the estate. The cutting garden blooms for more than half the year, including June! It’s where flowers are specifically grown to be cut for flower arrangements. There’s a table at the end of the pool where you can sit and enjoy the views, watch people walking by, and pretend you live there for a few moments.
Tracy loves rose gardens, and I always wonder how much it will cost at the nursery when we arrive back home. (we currently have 78 roses in our garden, but there is always room for more, or so Tracy tells me).These beauties lit up like firecrackers. When I saw these boxes for Carpenter Bees, I knew we had only just begun. The gardens contain components of both English and Italian Renaissance designs.
