Filoli National Trust for Historic Preservation

filoli historic house & garden

Video of the property from December 2022 shows a light-filled home that appears to have been well-preserved, with large windows, wood floors and mid-century furniture. Chris Pratt has drawn ire from architecture aficionados after news broke that the actor and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, had razed a historic, mid-century modern home to make way for a sprawling 15,000-sq-ft mansion. The meeting took place at a giant 20th-century estate built by a family that made its fortune in the gold rush. Fall is also a great time at any gardens in California, as it is the time of the harvest festivals and many other events. Everything is decorated with fall colours and pumpkins, and you might be even able to catch some foliage.

Can't Visit? Don't Worry!

Doesn’t everyone need a bon bon spoon, pickle knife or shears for cutting grape stems? Throughout the house there are examples of the prejudice that existed back when the Bourns and Roths lived in the house. According to its website, “Though William and Agnes Bourn initially conceived Filoli as a humble ‘country place,’ the House was designed as a space for entertaining on a grand scale. The large Ballroom and Reception Room hosted concerts and debut balls, and formal dinner parties were held in the elegant Dining Room.”  As you can see by the ballroom, humble it is not.

Losing architectural marvels is ‘a gut punch’

One of the most interesting parts of the house is the staff wing. It has for example a large Kitchen where the staff would prepare all the meals for the residents and their guests. The Butler’s Pantry has a huge safe to store all the silver tableware that used to be in use. Beautiful flower arrangements are situated all over the house and of course, the flowers are all from the Filoli Gardens. We also got a tip to look down while walking, since each room has a different floor pattern. This Tiffany & Co. family sterling silverware service for 18 comes from the early 1900s.

Summer is the best time to see many different roses and zinnias in bloom. The garden is definitely the main attraction, and as a plus you will get to visit the mansion too. The second floor has a research library and can be used by the members of Filoli.

Travel health notice information can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s interactive map showing travel recommendations by destination and the CDC’s travel health notice webpage. As the director of horticulture, responsible for all the growing things at Filoli, Jim Salyards knows those grounds intimately, but one spot among the thousands whispers to him, no matter the season. Summer Nights invite visitors to explore the House and Garden in the golden hour. Indigenous Ohlone people maintain a seasonal village in the area.

My favorite part of the Walled Garden, an expansive formal area subdivided into discrete rooms just off the glass-paneled garden house, is the Wedding Place, a terraced grassy staircase where the Roths’ daughter Berenice wed in 1941. And as at many historical sites in recent years, the curators at Filoli have made an effort to spotlight the less palatable aspects of its existence, such as the discrimination and racism prevalent in its heyday. Newport, who came to Filoli in 2016 after having worked at Delaware’s Winterthur Museum, said future exhibits will be shaped by this effort to take a more nuanced look at the estate’s past. A cozy night in for me typically involves a cup of tea, a dessert and a sumptuous period drama.

Touring the Redwoods in Muir Woods, California

To connect our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature, and shared stories. In 2004, the house changed hands to its last owners, couple Sam and Hilda Newman-Rolfe. Architect Ken Ungar, whose portfolio largely features high-end modern farmhouse-style residences, will design a home for the couple, Architectural Digest reported. The property, which is just across the street from Schwarzenegger’s mother, Maria Shriver, will also feature a three-car garage and a secondary unit near the pool. In different seasons you can enjoy different settings and events, and they are all very different. We walked thru the Rose Garden all the way to the Garden Orchard.

Imagine my surprise when I learned there’s a historical Georgian Revival estate and garden that puts many of these screen delights to shame just south of my hometown. Perhaps you’ve only seen Filoli festooned with holiday lights or when the tulips gently wave their hellos — perhaps you’ve never found the time to stroll the estate at all. Now is always the perfect time to go, and when you do, here are 11 must-sees when visiting Filoli. In 1922, just as the gardens had been completed, Bourn suffered a severe stroke and was confined to a wheelchair.

It is a great place either to start or end the garden tour. On out last visit to Filoli I wrote down some tips about what not to miss while touring the mansion and the gardens. After the passing of William and his wife, the mansion was sold to the Roth family, who kept growing the gardens and added a pool to it.

Dani adds that Filoli is also focused on providing a greater narrative around water. She explains, “Filoli’s landscape tells a broad story of California history with water as one connective thread; from Ohlone villages nestled along creek beds to the Bourn’s industrial reservoir holding San Francisco’s water supply. Visitors to the estate approach via its grand driveway and may take a self-guided tour of the mansion. The route passes through foyers, porticos, libraries and a ballroom in which they hear a lively period waltz. From the humble servants’ quarters to the elegant drawing and reception rooms, the tour is peppered with informative placards that explain how each room was used. The mansion’s opulent interiors are a window into a bygone era.

After the 1906 earthquake and fire, wealthy San Franciscans migrated south along the Peninsula to escape the city. Though the Peninsula seemed more insulated from earthquakes, the Bourns went on to build their new house 200 yards away from the San Andreas fault. The historically accurate interiors of Filoli complement the stunning exterior and gardens of the estate. The cutting garden blooms for more than half the year, including June! It’s where flowers are specifically grown to be cut for flower arrangements. There’s a table at the end of the pool where you can sit and enjoy the views, watch people walking by, and pretend you live there for a few moments.

Tracy loves rose gardens, and I always wonder how much it will cost at the nursery when we arrive back home. (we currently have 78 roses in our garden, but there is always room for more, or so Tracy tells me). These beauties lit up like firecrackers. When I saw these boxes for Carpenter Bees, I knew we had only just begun. The gardens contain components of both English and Italian Renaissance designs. Its reflecting pool was full of water lilies with the top of the old Carriage House (now the gift shop) Clock Tower peeking out above the yew hedge. “It had to be yew,” I crooned to Tracy, who pretended not to hear me.The view out toward the hills was fairly terrific, too.

Summer is the perfect time to attend their Summer Nights program and take in the roses and dahlias. Fall gifts visitors with a kaleidoscope of autumnal colors. But even with our soggy shoes and cold noses, wandering the gardens in the rain had a magical feel that I wasn’t prepared for. The rain splintered on the ground and refracted off the bulbs adorning the trees and bushes around us, casting sparkling light that guided us through the dark paths. The four of us emerged from the Woodland Garden, an informal area filled with camellias and staghorn ferns, and found ourselves on a paved terrace equipped with drink stands.

A Little History

The historic "Smith Mill" on Fault Creek was destroyed by fire in 1854. Pinckney's mill in "the largest gulch", which would be Spring Creek, was built in 1855 and later purchased by S. Although information on these mills is limited, they support the idea that "the area was thoroughly logged".[23] A large redwood tree remains on Laguna Creek just below the lower Filoli parking lot and on the main entrance road.

The Estate

They also have Orchard Days on weekends where you can learn about the harvest season while you eat and listen to live music. Vibrant tulips, blooming fruit trees, and a radiant sunset display nature’s beauty during the Golden Hour. Hike the trail at twilight or attend a free Bulb Talk with Filoli’s Interpretive staff. Connecting our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature and shared stories. San Mateo County historian Frank Stanger cited sizeable groves of redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in the Laguna Creek watershed. In the area around Filoli he described two historic lumber mills.

Can't Visit? Don't Worry!

He gained fame through his eye-catching designs and quirky personality, bolstered by his ambitions in acting, modeling, and self-promotion. He designed several homes in Los Angeles, and the destruction of one of the few that remain is part of the considerable backlash. It was most recently home to the late Hilda Rolfe, the widow of Sam Rolfe, co-creator of the series The Man from Uncle.

Things to Do at Filoli Gardens

The 0.83-acre home once featured an elaborate garden landscaped by Garrett Eckbo, and inside, offered five bedrooms and three bathrooms in a 2,770-square-foot single-story space, according to the Robb Report. To the contrary, Johnson played a key role in helping Trump try to overturn the election. Israel’s conduct in war against Hamas has eroded international support since Oct. 7 and threatens its special relationship with the United States. It was the Ohio National Guard that killed four unarmed students and wounded nine others at a rally against the Vietnam War at Kent State University in 1970. Since then, there have been uncountable examples of armed responses to nonviolent activities ending with innocent people getting hurt or killed.

Roth family

At Filoli we create inspiration in everyday life by welcoming all to experience the House, Garden, and natural lands. Located 30 miles south of San Francisco, Filoli is nestled on a slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounded by the protected Peninsula watershed. Every spring, Filoli plants thousands of bulbs around the House and Garden. Follow along their journey and watch their transformation from bulb to flower. Never mind that they are unfairly assigning racist motives to thousands of people protesting the killing of more than 34,000 Palestinian people, most of them women and children. It’s clear that these Republican politicians are less concerned with the wave of antiwar protests than using them for their own political ends.

Filoli is an expansive landscape situated on the unceded ancestral lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone. Today, this estate serves as a community cultural center open daily to the public. Spring is when the majority of flowers are blooming, including tulips, wisteria, camelias, and magnolias! They do have camellias blooming throughout the gardens, and there are a ton! The main attraction for winter is the extended nighttime hours for Holidays at Filoli. There aren’t as many flowers in fall, but the orchid is open to explore and the roses are still blooming!

filoli historic house & garden

The Georgian-style terraces in the Garden highlight sweeping views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Their simple design is a contrast to the formal English Renaissance-style garden to the south, which features lush flower beds, yew-lined avenues, and centerpieces like the Sunken Garden. That is simply the best time to see the most flowers in bloom.

‘Rivers in the sky’ have drenched California, yet even more extreme rains are possible

In the winter, the bare limbs are blanketed with moss, and the hundreds of branches make it appear as if the tree is wearing a fascinator of clouds. In the spring, the tree leafs out in brilliant greens with long, dangling chartreuse seed pods that dance in the breeze. As the days move into summer, the tree offers a welcoming, embracing umbrella of shade; sitting beneath it, time seems to still. Each season the house decor gets changed out, with lots of cut flowers in spring, goards in fall, and winter wonderland holiday decor in winter.

Until its completion, Pratt is waiting it out with his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, in a $32 million estate in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood. My family’s visit to see the house decorated for Christmas and the gardens draped with lights began on an inauspicious note, at the end of a long workweek with omicron casting a growing shadow over the holiday. My soon-to-be sister-in-law joined us on a brisk December night when the rain was coming down in sheets; it was the first time I’ve ever had to psych myself up for a visit. The estate wasn’t constructed just for aesthetic beauty, though it has that in spades. It’s a working estate that hosts a nature preserve with a peaceful, mile-long trail that’s open to hikers, fruit-producing orchards and an apiary that produces honey made by bees that pollinate the lavender fields and flowers.

Murmuring along to the Christmas songs sung much more skillfully by Ella Fitzgerald, the four of us clutched each other — and cups of mulled wine — under our umbrellas. It felt like our own pandemic-era version of a glamorous garden party — and my own cinematic moment. “Stories of Resilience,” the exhibit I saw in March, highlighted the stories of Filoli staff who faced adversity because of nationality, race or ethnicity. For example, Teikichi Taga, the estate’s Japanese butler, was forcibly relocated and incarcerated with his family in an internment camp during World War II.

They also have memberships for seniors and families at discounted rates. Filoli Historic House and Garden is one of my favorite places. It feels like you just stepped into a French garden, but you’re still in California! I love it so much that I got a membership so I can visit more often and get special members-only perks. Topics vary by day and season – peek behind-the-scenes during an Architecture Talk, compare floral scents during a Rose Talk, or discuss tulip tips during a Bulb Talk. Advanced reservations required, including member admission.

Before her death, Lurline ensured that would happen, refusing to sell the estate and instead agreeing to put it in the hands of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Filoli has been open for public tours of both the house and the gardens for almost 50 years. Today, visitors can join Saturday morning guided tours on the estate’s seven-mile network of nature trails that fan out across six native-California habitats—from redwood stands to grasslands. For those who prefer outdoor concerts to hiking, the 20th annual Jazz at Filoli series begins June 27.

The kitchen is the most perfect vintage-style kitchen, complete with black and white checkered floors. Many people just wear their comfy, everyday clothes though! It’s easy to do lots of walking, so comfy shoes are nice to have (but I managed in short heels on my first visit). The daffodils still look bright and happy, there are pots of flowers throughout, and food/drink trucks are in the Meadow. It can get crowded in summer as well, but not as packed as in spring. There are bright and blooming tulips and daffodils throughout the entire property, the incredible cherry blossom trees are filled with pink blossoms, and there are food trucks parked in the Meadow ready to serve you.

This gorgeous mansion and its beautiful gardens are only about a 30 minutes drive from San Francisco. The road zigzags in the Santa Cruz Mountains until you suddenly see the Filoli sign on the side of the road. The mansion is not visible from the main road, but a small road surrounded by some fields will take you to the parking lot. Since we live in the San Francisco Bay Area and relatively close by, we have visited the magnificent Filoli Historic House & Gardens multiple times. It has been a great place to take our guests to, or just to go enjoy different seasons and flower blooms. Filoli is such a tranquil place and we find something new on each visit there.

Inside a rustic modern ranch house with glorious views over Big Sky

In addition to their low-slung – and often single-storied – floorplan, they also usually have a low-pitched roof, wide eaves, picture windows, and a designated porch or deck. Though ranch-style houses come in different shapes and sizes, they do have a few characteristics in common. Additionally, many California ranches have an L or U-shaped silhouette, deftly creating a designated courtyard space. According to a recent study by Trulia, they’re the most popular types of residences in 34 states. Ranch-style houses are oftentimes — but not always — more affordable than other abodes.

Go for wood-framed doorways and glass door windows whose tone matches that of your floor. If you’re opting for a light wood tone throughout your house, the best way to throw in variety in your dining room is by creating a focal point with antique, oversized, metal finish pendant lights. Bring in wrought iron chandeliers on the kitchen island and distressed ceramic table lamps, metallic wall lamps, candle hurricanes with metal detailing, leather or linen lamp shades, or scroll jug or stirrup style lamp bases. Considering the landscape you’re in and the design style you want to adopt, you will have to personalize your design. However, the following design ideas can be tailor-made to suit any style you may want for your ranch house. However, if you’re not sure which type of furniture works the best with the ranch house style, you can’t go wrong with streamline silhouettes – especially those that pay homage to mid-century modernism.

Top Interior Designers In (and Around!) LA

Founded by Summer Jensen, the firm is dedicated to contrasting light and shadow, exquisitely meticulous attention to detail, and a deference to the natural environment. Founded by the exquisite interior designer Robyn Jensen, Jensen Interior Design is a treasured name on our list of top interior designers in LA. With his broad range of eclectic styles and sophisticated comfort, Martyn Lawrence Bullard is not only one of the top interior designers in LA but also one of the world’s most renowned interior designers.

With Wood.

Inspired by original photos of the 1950s home, the renovation refreshed its significant architectural past without detracting from its Wurster essence. Make sure to match the colors and modern tendencies throughout the home. When you can see through to other spaces you’ll want to make it an easy walk and not something that’s cut up. Ranch homes were made to utilize the land they were on, so when the view is this good and the windows are this big, don’t take away from the beauty.

His philosophy blurs the lines of time, creating timeless works of art in the interiors of hundreds of homes nationwide. On the porch, custom lounge chairs of reclaimed barn wood provide comfortable seating for watching sunsets. This beach-y midcentury modern ranch home is bright and airy with a fresh coat of paint, modern finishes, and wood accents. Naturally, we also love the seating nook that helps blend indoors and outdoors — as a true ranch should.

Most ranch houses back in the day don’t necessarily follow the open wide spaces concept found outside for the interiors of the homes. This can be a challenge especially in old ranch style houses wherein certain elements such as walls can make the space look closed in. Raised decks in ranch style houses are oftentimes made out of wood and it might be a pretty good idea for you to test out its strength and integrity as well. It may be rotting in a few places and its foundation may have long been jeopardized. If you tend to find this too plain and bland, you can actually increase your curb appeal by opting to add a gable above the front door.

#4 // Modern Ranch Style House with Roof Windows

Inspired by white-washed buildings perched along Mediterranean hillsides, this bright and airy, 2,100-square-foot modern home is actually a renovation of a single-story 1950s ranch. The sloping site of this two-bedroom ranch home provides views through an oak savanna and the coastal mountain range. A bar-shaped plan maximizes daylight and natural ventilation, giving the homeowner efficient "modern ranch" living in the heart of Yamhill County wine country. Don’t be afraid to utilize texture when adding a modern touch to your ranch-style home. Utilize the lengthiness and open appeal by adding unique accents like stone and wood.

#5 // Contemporary White Ranch

A true homage to the ranch style design for houses would have to be bay or bow windows. The look is modern and open and more than that, these types of windows are particularly great for bringing in lots of natural light inside the home. As they were in the 1940s, ranch houses remain a great choice for young families today. They are affordable, easier to maintain, require less baby-proofing, and allow for easy changing around of the decor and function of indoor space thanks to the large, open floor plans.

Shop for vintage or secondhand furniture, repaint existing pieces and focus on small decor updates to refresh the ranch house interior on a budget. You can bring as many elements from the exterior to the interior with thoughtful interior design, and a fireplace is a great place to do that. You can go with a stone fireplace, a stone with a hue that’s commonly found in the neighborhood. Add a small piece of artwork in the kitchen in a place that doesn’t get much traffic, it elevates the entire look of the space. The best part about ranch-style houses is that you can maintain the crux of the region and yet bring in luxurious elements or smart living features that make your life comfortable, as a homeowner. With a blend of aesthetics and functionality, you can bring any dream decor to life.

ranch house interior design

To add more emphasis, you can also add a nice rug made of natural fibers to get a tactile feel upon entering the front door. To exude an inviting and pleasant welcome, add a tall houseplant to the entryway. It’s not hard to identify a ranch-style house — you just need to know what you’re looking for. While these residences come in various shapes, sizes, and styles, ranch style homes are typically defined as sprawling, low-slung structures. We're excited to announce our new, free Add a Home feature that enables anyone to easily create a beautiful page that showcases a home or home project in front of the amazing and highly engaged Dwell community.

Los Angeles-based designer Demitri Sgourakis works globally and is best known for his modern approach to eclectic interiors. His eye for fashion-forward style, combined with his deep knowledge and appreciation for the historical roots of design, result in fresh yet classic creations. Internationally renowned for a high design that is bold, warm, sophisticated, and livable, Jeff Andrews creates innovative and refreshing interiors for families and celebrities alike. Inspired by his southern California upbringing, Jeff Andrews Design creates magical interior and exterior spaces that always feel like home. Led by Kara Smith, KES Studio is a boutique atelier that offers innovative and smart interior design and lifestyle services for design-forward residential clients and one-of-a-kind hospitality environments. Whether it’s from travel, art, and even her clients, Kara is constantly drawing inspiration to create cutting-edge designs.

Consciously interpreting the ranchos of the mid-19th century, May was one of many notable post-Arts and Crafts architects. A prolific designer and promoter, May sold the style that he himself called “the early California ranch house” throughout the West. He spoke not only about the architectural form, but also about the casual, family-oriented culture of the early (Mexican) Californians, whose gallant hospitality was legendary. Working in tandem with landscape architects, May designed low houses that followed the contours of the land, enclosing a courtyard or patio with carefully planned views of nature. By the mid-‘30s, his ranch houses had been published by Sunset magazine and nationally.

And, like most modern homes, it’s likely a ranch residence will also feature an attached garage. A must on every list of top interior designers in LA, Kelly Wearstler is a design force! Kelly Wearstler’s design is driven by a deep passion for articulating a unique story and formidable point of view. Founded in 1995, the interior design studio has since evolved into a global lifestyle brand. Of the many story lines that converge in the marvelously idiosyncratic Los Angeles home of Kirsten Dunst, one of the most compelling is the enduring relationship between the actor and interior designer Jane Hallworth. The two met just over 20 years ago, when Dunst was only 18 years old and Hallworth, having recently alighted in California from university in England, was assisting her sisters, Dunst’s longtime stylists Nina and Clare Hallworth.

You ought to avoid any intricate details in the window and door casings and opt for the simpler and cleaner lines of square cut molding instead. A common theme for the interiors of ranch homes back in the day is that the different rooms with different purposes are separated from each other. That isn’t the trend anymore as these days, homeowners are opting for more open and more collaborative room spaces in the home. Casement windows are easy to open and close and they come with convenient crank handles. The design is simple and it can work well with any type of interior or exterior design of the house so you don’t have to change a lot of its surrounding areas as well. An easy upgrade that wouldn’t take up too much of your time and money would be to go for a front door that brings in a pop of color, making it the focal point of the home’s design.

This rustic modern ranch style home truly blends indoor/outdoor living with multiple double sliders to various seating areas, a firepit, and an in-ground pool. Furthermore, the large windows bring natural light in and the covered patio acts as an additional living space outdoors. There may be a loft or a semi-finished attic or a basement, but for a house to be considered a ranch, the main floor is the ground floor, there is no real “upstairs,” and that’s that, it’s one story. Nearly all ranch homes are laid out on a single-story floor plan with easy access to all areas of the house and an open flow between rooms.

A Tour of the 24,000-Square-Foot Winchester Mansion in California

And they were sad and desperate for a way to see that they were okay.” Winchester herself was dealing with the loss of her whole family. Exactly why Winchester embarked on this dizzying cycle of building, undoing and rebuilding is impossible to say. The medium reportedly instructed her to constantly build a house for these ghosts. A popular tourist attraction, the house, along with many other cultural institutions in the United States, has closed to help curb the spread of coronavirus. But as Michele Debczak reports for Mental Floss, you can now explore the Winchester House from afar via a detailed video tour posted on the mansion’s website.

The Terrifying True Story Of The Winchester Mystery House And The Tormented Heiress Who Built It

It is also likely that the labyrinth construction of the home may have been the result of making the home functional after the earthquake. Furthermore, there are very few actual recorded incidences to back up the claims of the home being haunted by spirits. Because she was living off the gun company's fortune, the spiritualist told her to move to California and build a home that would appease and trap the ghosts who follow her.

winchester mystery house photos

The next stop in the house is the south conservatory, which is the room with the most windows.

To this day, the cracked walls and torn wallpaper from that night remain, as do the panels of stained-glass flowers that give the room its name. “How would you feel if, all of a sudden, you got knocked out of bed by an earthquake? “You think the world is coming down around your ears.” After she was finally rescued, Winchester left the house and stayed on a houseboat in San Francisco Bay for a while. Perhaps the boat’s steadier rocking helped quell her fears.

One of the World's Creepiest Attractions Just Got Creepier

She hoped, perhaps, to get advice from the beyond as to how to spend her fortune or what to do with her life. Born around 1840, Sarah Winchester grew up in a world of privilege. She spoke four languages, attended the best schools around, married well, and eventually gave birth to a daughter, Annie. However, tragedy struck in her late twenties when Annie died, followed by the death of Sarah’s husband William more than a decade later. At the time, newspapers were filled with advertisements, luring people to move across the country and settle in the newly incorporated California.

The floor plan is part of the Immersive 360° Tour, which includes "unprecedented access" to the home, including "...many rooms previously inaccessible on standard Estate tours." The cost? It's $8.99, and it also features a "Behind the Ropes" features (where, yes, you'll venture into rooms formerly roped-off). Throughout the years-long construction of the Winchester Mystery House, Sarah Winchester would never confirm that she was building a haunted house. Gold and silver chandeliers hung from the ceilings above hand-inlaid parquet flooring. Dozens of artful stained-glass windows created by Tiffany & Co. dotted the walls, including some designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself. One window, in particular, was intended to create a prismatic rainbow effect on the floor when light flowed through it – of course, the window ended up on an interior wall, and thus the effect was never achieved.

The most notable date in the construction of Llanada Villa was April 18, 1906, when the great San Francisco earthquake caused tremendous devastation throughout the region, and Sarah Winchester’s home suffered severe damage. The house was forever changed when chimneys collapsed, a wing was destroyed, and a prominent seven-story tower toppled down. Damage from the earthquake can still be viewed at the property even today, and the mansion was never restored to its former prominence. I have known about this famous mansion since I was a child. Many years ago, a publishing company put out a series of books that featured cut-out paper models of various haunted, mysterious houses. I took the time to meticulously put together a model of the Winchester Mystery House.

Even more luxurious than the fixtures was the plumbing and electrical work. Rare for the time, the Winchester Mystery House boasted indoor plumbing, including coveted hot running water, and push-button gas lighting available throughout the home. Additionally, forced-air heating flowed throughout the house.

Sarah’s inheritance was said to be more than 20 million dollars and included a 50 percent stake in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1881, Sarah was one of the wealthiest women in the world. The interior of the mansion remains closed due to the pandemic response, but there are open-air tours of Sarah's beautiful Victorian-style gardens.

In 1885, a widowed Sarah Winchester moved to California to start a new life in a farmhouse she built on 40 acres.

William and Sarah had one daughter, Annie, who died at just 6 weeks old. They never had any other children, and William died 15 years later from tuberculosis, in 1881 at age 43. The Cap is an unfinished round room constructed with redwood beams.

We depend on ad revenue to craft and curate stories about the world’s hidden wonders. Consider supporting our work by becoming a member for as little as $5 a month. Her work has appeared in a number of publications, including NYmag.com, Flavorwire and Tina Brown Media's Women in the World.

Throughout the house, you can find staircases that lead to nowhere, doors that open onto walls, and rooms with windows on the floor. The bizarre design elements feed into the theory that Winchester was trying to trap and confuse the ghosts that haunted her, but Boehme said there's a more realistic explanation. Winchester designed the home with no blueprints and no formal design experience. These design oddities may have been mistakes or a simple change of mind. However, it is unclear to this day if these choices were deliberate or accidental.

The standard hour-long guided mansion tour includes a romp through the gardens plus entry to an exhibition of guns and rifles. One particular attic space took the most effort, says the longtime house historian Janan Boehme, who helped with the restoration plans. There were staircases and things, but there was no railing, there was no safety at all,” she says. “If you walked across, you’d just fall through a hole.” The maintenance team had to build a new wooden walkway through the space. Shortly after her husband’s death, Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose, CA. There, she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the world’s longest home renovation, stopping only when Sarah passed on September 5, 1922.

Eventually, the path leads up to the Witch’s Cap in the South Turret, billed as the highlight of the new tour. To reach it you must pass through a corridor scaled for a child’s playhouse, narrow and scarcely five feet high. There’s light flowing in from occasional windows, but even so, it’s hard to orient yourself in space as the walls close in. Such beliefs wouldn’t have been particularly unusual at the time. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a surge of what was called spiritualism all over the country. “All these women, they lost their husbands, their sons, their brothers, their fathers.

The consensus among the house’s staff is that she was a creative do-gooder who endured through profound personal loss. “She would give to causes that were dear to her, and she’d usually do it anonymously,” Boehme says. She paid her workers far more than the standard wage, and kept them on for many years in part because she wanted to ensure their livelihoods. Ignoffo speculates that she threw herself into her all-consuming building project to feel closer to her late husband—architecture had long been one of William Winchester’s passions. In the Daisy Bedroom—which is on the original tour—Winchester rang a bell to summon her servants, who couldn’t find her in the chaos.

Congressman Mike Johnson Elected Speaker of the House

new speaker of the house

The vote makes Johnson the first speaker ever elected on the fourth ballot of an election. When speaker elections have gone to multiple ballots, no speaker has ever been elected on ballots four to eight. Johnson authored legislation called the Stop the Sexualization of Children Act of 2022, which "prohibits the use of federal funds to develop, implement, facilitate, or fund any sexually-oriented program, event, or literature for children under the age of 10," his office said. Critics have dubbed it a federal "don't say gay" measure and argued that it's aimed at barring references to LGBTQ people. Johnson has a spotless history of voting against legal abortion, earning an "A+" rating from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. Abortion rights proponents have noted his work from 2010 as a senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, citing a letter in which he fought to shut down an abortion clinic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, another Scalise supporter, told reporters after Johnson was elected speaker-designate that he believes Republicans are "back" and the conference's agenda "back on track." The challenge for House Republicans is they still have eight more spending bills to pass including two that have been stuck in committee because of disagreements within GOP ranks. In his letter to colleagues, Johnson set out an aggressive time table for passing the bills, but the issue will be finding a way to pass the legislation in just a narrow GOP majority. The House is now voting to pass a resolution in support of Israel in the war against Hamas – the first measure to come to the floor to be passed after Speaker Mike Johnson was elected this morning following three weeks of a speakerless-House.

Johnson wins nomination

Mr. Johnson was only able to emerge as his party’s nominee for speaker this week after three other G.O.P. nominees before him were unable to rally enough support. When Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana wanted to make the case against abortion rights last year during a Capitol Hill committee hearing, he grilled a witness in graphic fashion. On Nov. 8, 2020, Mr. Johnson was onstage at a northwest Louisiana church speaking about Christianity in America when Mr. Trump called. Mr. Johnson had been in touch with the president’s team on his myriad legal challenges seeking to overturn the results, “to restore the integrity of our election process,” according to a Facebook post by Mr. Johnson recounting the exchange.

Jeffries: Democrats will continue finding common ground with GOP "whenever and wherever possible"

The Times’ Liam Dillon and CalMatters housing reporter Manuela Tobias chat about the latest developments in California housing policy and interview key newsmakers and other reporters. City Council would have to approve the rezoning plan, after all of that, in just eight months. But the new rules have substantially increased the number of new homes cities must allow. In Southern California alone, local governments must plan for the construction of 1.3 million new homes by 2029 — triple the number required during the previous cycle. And cities now must show that the properties they’re targeting for new development are more likely to have housing built on them. The finding comes after years of contention among Gov. Gavin Newsom, state lawmakers and cities across California over growth.

Only hours later, Mr. Emmer told Republicans in a closed-door meeting that he was dropping his bid, according to a person familiar with his decision who divulged the private discussion on the condition of anonymity. He has also opposed continued funding for the war in Ukraine, which has emerged as a bitter fault line in the G.O.P. and in the spending battles that any new speaker will have to navigate in the coming days. House Republicans chose and then quickly repudiated yet another of their nominees for speaker on Tuesday and rushed to name a fourth, pressing to put an end to a remarkable three-week-long deadlock that has left Congress leaderless and paralyzed. On Wednesday, Mr. Johnson was toiling to help Republicans turn the page from the chaos of the past few weeks. He said there would be none of the typical celebrations that accompany the election of a new speaker. Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the No. 2 House Republican and the first to be nominated for speaker following Mr. McCarthy’s ouster, was ultimately seen as insufficiently pro-Trump by too many of his colleagues.

He made no mention of the impeachment inquiry into President Biden, or of the impending government shutdown that will begin next month if Congress fails to pass legislation to keep the government funded. Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, a founder of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus and someone Mr. Johnson has described as a mentor, was the next member to be elected speaker designate in a secret ballot. He had Mr. Trump and the far right in his corner, but ultimately failed to win over more centrist members of his party who steadfastly refused to support him.

Although Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was not in the running, he received more votes than Donalds in the final round. Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana won in a three-round vote late Tuesday to become the next speaker-designee — the fourth since Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted from the position on Oct. 3. Majority Leader Steve Scalise threw his support behind Johnson late Tuesday, calling him a "dear friend" in a statement.

But he defended the actions of congressional Republicans in objecting to Mr. Biden’s victory. The election on Wednesday of Mr. Johnson, 51, to the post second in line to the presidency has focused new attention on his behind-the-scenes role in trying to overturn the election results on behalf of former President Donald J. Trump. We’re seeing a little bit of that here, with his gracious words toward Jeffries, promising to work together and find common ground. After the leak of the Supreme Court’s decision on abortion in May of last year, the Johnsons hosted an episode that explored the “future of life in America,” while also sharing their personal jubilation about the news of the pending decision. “We went through a lot to get here, but we are ready to govern and that will begin right away,” Johnson says in his first news conference as speaker.

Without the money, the production of new housing for low-income and homeless residents throughout L.A. Would take a massive hit at a time when more than 41,000 people are homeless and soaring rents and the COVID-19 pandemic are making it harder for Angelenos to stay in their homes. If city leaders do not fix the housing plan or complete the rezoning by the new deadline, they could lose access to billions of dollars in affordable housing grants, officials with the state Department of Housing and Community Development said in a letter this week. “Local government has less control under these bills,” says Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, a former leader of the state Senate. As a legislator, Steinberg pushed through some of the earliest legislation that attempted to incentivize more urban housing near public transportation.

He failed to persuade far-right members of the conference to support him on the floor. The podcasts, spanning 69 episodes, offer an extended window into Mr. Johnson's views and politics, as he co-hosts the program with his wife, a licensed pastoral counselor. “I look forward to meeting with Speaker Johnson soon to discuss the path forward to avoid a government shutdown,” Mr. Schumer said in a statement.

Prior to his election to Congress in 2016, Speaker Johnson was an attorney and served in the Louisiana State Legislature from 2015 to 2017. With less than seven years under his belt, Johnson has a shorter length of service in the House than past speakers in modern history. McCarthy was in the House for 16 years before he was elected speaker, Pelosi had 20 years of experience, Paul Ryan served for 16 years, and John Boehner had 20 years before he ascended to the top job. Wednesday morning, hours before an expected vote, Trump, the de facto leader of the Republican Party, said he wasn't technically endorsing Johnson but suggesting the House elect him. Johnson is a constitutional lawyer who has used his talents to craft some creative — and controversial — theories.

Three competing delegations attended on Monday, Axios reported, with the entirety of New York’s Republican congressional delegation demanding Shafik’s resignation, and Democrats criticizing her for not protecting Jewish students and faculty. Students say they were peacefully protesting when the mass arrests began around 1.30am on Thursday. One student who spoke to WBZ-TV anonymously said that students were “dragged” and “pushed away … without much regard for [their] safety.” A Boston police spokesperson told WBZ-TV that four officers were injured, all non-life-threatening. The arrests in Boston came after Emerson officials ordered student protesters on Wednesday to dismantle their encampment-style demonstration in the city’s Boylston Place Alley, where students had been protesting since Sunday, WBZ-TV reported. Rep. Kevin Hern, an Oklahoma Republican who chairs the influential Republican Study Committee, dropped out of the race for speaker Tuesday evening and backed Johnson.

If all 221 Republicans and 212 Democrats mark themselves present, Johnson will need 217 votes to win the gavel. Two seats are vacant due to the resignations of Reps. Chris Stewart, a Republican from Utah, and David Cicilline, a Democrat from Rhode Island. Turning to Jeffries, Aguilar said the Democratic leader has "never turned his back on the will of the American people." Shortly after 1 p.m., the House began voting for speaker, with Johnson as the Republican nominee and Jeffries as the Democratic nominee.

Reps. Byron Donalds, Mark Green, Mike Johnson and Roger Williams remain in the speaker race. Thirty-three of the "other" votes were cast for McCarthy, Rep. Kat Cammack of Florida said. Johnson continued to earn the most votes with 97, followed by Donalds with 31 votes, Green with 21 votes and Williams with 20 votes. Republicans not on the ballot earned 34 "other" votes, while there were three "present" votes, according to Rep. Randy Weber of Texas. The race now is a head-to-head contest between Donalds and Johnson as the GOP conference moves on to a third ballot, according to Stefanik.

“Rezoning the entire city in one year is infeasible, and we don’t believe that penalty was meant to apply to jurisdictions pursuing compliance in good faith,” Comisar said, adding that the mayor planned to work with Newsom and state legislators to address the issue. Experts have widely praised the city’s efforts for identifying realistic sites suitable for housing construction, rather than attempting to shirk that responsibility. Until recently, many cities skirted the state’s housing law with little consequence. Los Angeles must rezone to accommodate an additional quarter-million new homes by mid-October after state housing regulators rejected the city’s long-term plan for growth.

The brief claimed that the officials and courts in each of the battleground states unconstitutionally usurped the power granted to state legislators by changing election rules in 2020. But Johnson's record on Ukraine funding has been criticized by Ukraine advocates. Johnson received an "F" grade from Republicans for Ukraine on its GOP Congressional Report Card. "We'll be talking about the support and what's necessary to get it," Johnson said.

While most GOP leaders continue to support U.S. aid for Ukraine, polls show growing skepticism among the party’s rank and file, as well as a sharp drop in support for further military assistance among people who identify as Republicans. Johnson, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, was one of 57 lawmakers — all of them Republicans — who voted against a $39.8 billion aid package for Ukraine in May. The Republican-led House voted Wednesday for Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) as its new speaker. Johnson, who served as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, was the GOP’s fourth nominee for the speakership. The drawn-out and chaotic voting process had left the House effectively closed for business. During the speaker battle, Trump proved more adept at hurting candidates than helping them win — his early endorsee, Jordan, flamed out on the floor.

His plan envisions beginning negotiations on spending in October, and acknowledges they could continue until April. As speaker of the House, Johnson will have final say over what bills make it to the floor. Funding the government past a deadline of Nov. 17 is the most pressing item on the agenda.

If Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio was the most prominent public face of the congressional effort to fight the results of the 2020 election, his mentee, the newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, was a silent but pivotal partner. “This affirms the path that we took,” Representative Bob Good of Virginia, one of the eight Republicans who voted to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, tells reporters. “From an outside point of view these last few weeks probably look like total chaos, confusion, no end in sight," he said. "But from my perspective, this is one of the greatest experiences of the recent history of our republic." Democrats were scathing in their assessment of Mr. Johnson’s ascent to the speakership.

Johnson said Republicans would "dispense with all of the usual ceremonies and celebrations” and get to work. “You’re going to see an aggressive schedule in the days and weeks ahead,” he said. Representative Ken Buck of Colorado said that Mr. Johnson was not involved in postelection efforts to invalidate the results, even though Mr. Johnson was a critical player in those activities. Mr. Johnson has opposed continued funding for the war in Ukraine, which has emerged as a bitter fault line in the G.O.P. and in the spending battles that he will have to navigate in the coming days. Republicans held a candidate forum Tuesday night with five members vying to be the next speaker-designee after Emmer withdrew.

More from CBS News

He once shared the story with a mostly Democratic audience at a congressional hearing on slavery reparations, and he was surprised to hear boos as he spoke, he later recounted to the Council for National Policy, an assembly of conservative donors known for its strict secrecy. To show support for racial equality, Mr. Johnson in the past has told audiences that he and his wife adopted a Black teenager they met through an evangelical youth group — like the movie “The Blind Side” but without the N.F.L. prospects, he has quipped. Mr. Johnson’s hallmark in Congress has been combining his hard-line views with a gentle personal style.

He also called on Congress to address the situation at the U.S. border with Mexico, combat inflation and curb federal spending. "But I also do believe that the House has passed the threshold for an impeachment inquiry into the conduct of President Biden." In his blueprint for the rest of the 118th Congress, Johnson proposed the House take up the farm bill in December and begin negotiations with the Senate "as soon as possible" following action by the upper chamber. "It's unsustainable. We have to get the country back on track. This is not going to be an easy task, and tough decisions will have to be made. But the consequences if we don't act now are unbearable," he said.

new speaker of the house

Johnson proposed taking up individual bills between now and Nov. 17, when current funding expires. He said another stopgap measure — known as a continuing resolution — might be needed to prevent the Senate from "jam[ming] the House with a Christmas omnibus," referring to a consolidated spending bill. He said a continuing resolution could have a deadline of Jan. 15 or April 15, depending on the consensus in the GOP conference. Jordan lost 25 Republicans in the third round of voting, falling short yet again with 194 votes, compared to 210 for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Twenty-five Republicans voted for various other candidates, including McCarthy, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry.

Newsom and some legislators have argued that local restrictions on development are a key reason why housing costs are so high in California, causing crushing rent burdens and rising homelessness. But he said the city hasn’t done enough to comply with new, stricter state laws designed to promote greater development across California. In the end, several protections were negotiated into Atkins’ bill to preserve rental and low-income housing, deter speculators and retain local government control over design standards. They could rezone a parcel for a new housing development of up to 10 units and streamline government permitting. A builder could bypass the California Environmental Quality Act, often abused by a project’s opponents.

Mr. Johnson came to Congress in 2017 with support from the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, though he has never joined the group. “The slates of electors were produced by a clearly unconstitutional process, period,” he said. Over a year later, on “Truth Be Told,” the Christian podcast he hosts with his wife, Kelly, Mr. Johnson continued to argue that he and his colleagues had been right to object to the election results. “You know the allegations about these voting machines, some of them being rigged with this software by Dominion, there’s a lot of merit to that,” Mr. Johnson said. Johnson praises former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, unceremoniously deposed three weeks ago.

Complete Guide to the New Carnival Jubilee Cruise Ship

jubilee cruise

I arrived 15 minutes early for a magic show at the Punchliner Comedy Club, and I couldn't find a single available seat in the entire place. On another night, I showed up on time for Family Feud Live in the ship's theater, and it was a standing-room-only situation. The sizes of the performance venues are generally way too small for the number of passengers wishing to watch the shows.

THAT OUGHT TO BE ENOUGH FUN FOR ANYONE!

While the decor and finishes are very basic, the room was functional and had quite a bit of storage. Just off Icon of the Seas, we appreciated the extra shelves and space in this closet. Since we were part of a small media group hosted by the cruise line on this sailing, we had a private transfer from the airport to Galveston. Though, Carnival does also offer transfers to the port on embarkation day.

Night Owls

My cabin had some of the best soundproofing I've experienced on a new ship in a long time — I had balcony accommodations near an elevator bank and heard nothing when I was in my room. However, a couple of passengers told me they could hear noise from Bolt in their balcony cabin on Deck 15. Pay a fee to ride, and you (or you and a friend) can navigate two laps of twists and turns around the ship's funnel as you use the throttle and hyper-boost buttons to try to break the day's speed record. (Yes, you'll be timed, and don't forget to smile for a photo.) The ocean views from above are totally worth the cost.

Carnival Jubilee Onboard Activities

Speaking of the bed, it was exceptionally comfortable, and I was excited to find that the TV across from it had a sizable selection of free movies (as well as newer releases for a fee). The TV also allows you to watch select live channels and shipboard programming and to check your onboard bill. It was completely different — different color, different taste and different presentation — from what I received when I ordered the same drink on a sailing two months prior. However, the old ingredients were listed on the menu, meaning passengers weren't getting what they thought they ordered. The first couple had to do with differences between the Carnival HUB app and the daily Fun Times printed schedule. On one occasion, the app said Seafood Shack opened half an hour earlier than it did, while the paper version of the daily schedule had the correct information.

This Ship is Bananas

Passengers have to make their way to the lounge, which isn't next to the theater. It's kitschy but classy in the most unexpected and delightful ways. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to the Center Stage Bar on Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Cruise Line's newest ship and the third in the Excel Class. The bar — along with several other dining venues and the onboard shops — wasn't open during my two-night sailing prior to the ship's first voyage with paying passengers. But each time I passed by it in Grand Central, one of the ship's six zones, I couldn't help staring. Carnival Jubilee balcony rooms are available in multiple categories from Deck 5 on up.

THE PUNCHLINER COMEDY CLUB

Our Behind the Scenes Tour was led by Vivek, the ship’s Food and Beverage Director. For approximately 90 minutes, he guided us through the Galley, Chef’s Table, food storage facilities, and down I-95 to see some of the other ship operations. It’s always impressive to see the inner-workings of cruise ships. There’s also the main dining room and several specialty restaurants like Bonsai Teppanyaki, Rudi’s Seagrill, and Fahrenheit 555. Cruisers will be happy to know that Cucina del Capitano and Chibang are still complimentary on this ship too.

The excitement was palpable, which bodes well for passengers since the crew is prepared and the ship is ready. Like the Vista-class Carnival liners, Jubilee has Havana staterooms with a patio (indoor-outdoor space) with direct access to an exclusive Sundeck area with loungers, Bar and swimming pool. Another Vista-class type of cabins are Family Harbor (clustered near Camp Ocean/kids club) and with direct access to the exclusive Family Harbor Lounge. Cloud 9 Spa staterooms traditionally offer exclusive amenities, including premium bathrobes and slippers and Elemis brand toiletries. There are several types of balcony cabins to choose from on Carnival Jubilee. A junior balcony is 216 square feet counting the balcony and can sleep up to four guests.

While there are so many free and delicious choices available, you certainly do not have to pay extra. Yet, these upcharge venues provide an excellent alternative to the other options throughout the ship. During our cruise, we dined at the two most elegant restaurants. With this option, cruisers can dine whenever they want by simply joining a virtual queue in the HUB app. And like a restaurant on land, you may have to wait for a table. Unlike other cruise lines with flexible dining, cruisers can not pre-make reservations.

In addition to dining at the Pacific Dining Room, guests can choose to dine at Cucina del Capitano and Chibang for no additional fee. If you’ve never cruised from Galveston, TX before, it’s important to know that the cruise port is not conveniently near an airport like most Florida homeports. Most cruise passengers will fly into Houston Hobby (HOU) or Bush-Intercontinental (IAH), which will require some drive time to get to the cruise port. This is why it’s extra important to fly in a day early for your cruise. For those looking for a little adventure, there’s the Ultimate Playground zone.

With that being said, where other cruise lines have been cutting back on MDR menus, Carnival recently revamped theirs adding new dishes inspired by the Chief Culinary Officer, Emeril Lagasse. These dishes did stand out to us, while most of the other menu items were on par with other cruise lines. There is also a full vegan menu available which is great for those with dietary restrictions.

With 13 bars and lounges, Carnival Jubilee will have something you’ll love. Drink package, but be aware that, because of Texas law, the package isn’t available until the second ay onboard. The package is pretty inclusive, with really only the most premium drinks not covered. It only operates when the ship isn’t in a port, but when it does operate, it’s packed with people playing the slots or table games.

Comparing our experiences on Carnival Celebration last year, we really enjoyed the Most Magnificent Circus but Rio Carnival didn’t live up to that level. There was singing, dancing, and some aerial acts, but the Brazilian-inspired show didn’t really fit with the Texas vibe. Since we had already tried some drinks at Dr. Inks earlier in the cruise, we opted for something different tonight. Both were quite good; mine even came with a Swedish Fish and Don’s squid ink. Tomorrow was another sea day, but we still had plenty to accomplish around the ship.
