I arrived 15 minutes early for a magic show at the Punchliner Comedy Club, and I couldn't find a single available seat in the entire place. On another night, I showed up on time for Family Feud Live in the ship's theater, and it was a standing-room-only situation. The sizes of the performance venues are generally way too small for the number of passengers wishing to watch the shows.

While the decor and finishes are very basic, the room was functional and had quite a bit of storage. Just off Icon of the Seas, we appreciated the extra shelves and space in this closet. Since we were part of a small media group hosted by the cruise line on this sailing, we had a private transfer from the airport to Galveston. Though, Carnival does also offer transfers to the port on embarkation day.
Night Owls
My cabin had some of the best soundproofing I've experienced on a new ship in a long time — I had balcony accommodations near an elevator bank and heard nothing when I was in my room. However, a couple of passengers told me they could hear noise from Bolt in their balcony cabin on Deck 15. Pay a fee to ride, and you (or you and a friend) can navigate two laps of twists and turns around the ship's funnel as you use the throttle and hyper-boost buttons to try to break the day's speed record. (Yes, you'll be timed, and don't forget to smile for a photo.) The ocean views from above are totally worth the cost.

Carnival Jubilee Onboard Activities
Speaking of the bed, it was exceptionally comfortable, and I was excited to find that the TV across from it had a sizable selection of free movies (as well as newer releases for a fee). The TV also allows you to watch select live channels and shipboard programming and to check your onboard bill. It was completely different — different color, different taste and different presentation — from what I received when I ordered the same drink on a sailing two months prior. However, the old ingredients were listed on the menu, meaning passengers weren't getting what they thought they ordered. The first couple had to do with differences between the Carnival HUB app and the daily Fun Times printed schedule. On one occasion, the app said Seafood Shack opened half an hour earlier than it did, while the paper version of the daily schedule had the correct information.

Passengers have to make their way to the lounge, which isn't next to the theater. It's kitschy but classy in the most unexpected and delightful ways. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to the Center Stage Bar on Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Cruise Line's newest ship and the third in the Excel Class. The bar — along with several other dining venues and the onboard shops — wasn't open during my two-night sailing prior to the ship's first voyage with paying passengers. But each time I passed by it in Grand Central, one of the ship's six zones, I couldn't help staring. Carnival Jubilee balcony rooms are available in multiple categories from Deck 5 on up.
THE PUNCHLINER COMEDY CLUB
Our Behind the Scenes Tour was led by Vivek, the ship’s Food and Beverage Director. For approximately 90 minutes, he guided us through the Galley, Chef’s Table, food storage facilities, and down I-95 to see some of the other ship operations. It’s always impressive to see the inner-workings of cruise ships. There’s also the main dining room and several specialty restaurants like Bonsai Teppanyaki, Rudi’s Seagrill, and Fahrenheit 555. Cruisers will be happy to know that Cucina del Capitano and Chibang are still complimentary on this ship too.
The excitement was palpable, which bodes well for passengers since the crew is prepared and the ship is ready. Like the Vista-class Carnival liners, Jubilee has Havana staterooms with a patio (indoor-outdoor space) with direct access to an exclusive Sundeck area with loungers, Bar and swimming pool. Another Vista-class type of cabins are Family Harbor (clustered near Camp Ocean/kids club) and with direct access to the exclusive Family Harbor Lounge. Cloud 9 Spa staterooms traditionally offer exclusive amenities, including premium bathrobes and slippers and Elemis brand toiletries. There are several types of balcony cabins to choose from on Carnival Jubilee. A junior balcony is 216 square feet counting the balcony and can sleep up to four guests.
While there are so many free and delicious choices available, you certainly do not have to pay extra. Yet, these upcharge venues provide an excellent alternative to the other options throughout the ship. During our cruise, we dined at the two most elegant restaurants. With this option, cruisers can dine whenever they want by simply joining a virtual queue in the HUB app. And like a restaurant on land, you may have to wait for a table. Unlike other cruise lines with flexible dining, cruisers can not pre-make reservations.

In addition to dining at the Pacific Dining Room, guests can choose to dine at Cucina del Capitano and Chibang for no additional fee. If you’ve never cruised from Galveston, TX before, it’s important to know that the cruise port is not conveniently near an airport like most Florida homeports. These dishes did stand out to us, while most of the other menu items were on par with other cruise lines. There is also a full vegan menu available which is great for those with dietary restrictions.
With 13 bars and lounges, Carnival Jubilee will have something you’ll love. Drink package, but be aware that, because of Texas law, the package isn’t available until the second ay onboard. The package is pretty inclusive, with really only the most premium drinks not covered. It only operates when the ship isn’t in a port, but when it does operate, it’s packed with people playing the slots or table games.
Comparing our experiences on Carnival Celebration last year, we really enjoyed the Most Magnificent Circus but Rio Carnival didn’t live up to that level. There was singing, dancing, and some aerial acts, but the Brazilian-inspired show didn’t really fit with the Texas vibe. Since we had already tried some drinks at Dr. Inks earlier in the cruise, we opted for something different tonight. Both were quite good; mine even came with a Swedish Fish and Don’s squid ink. Tomorrow was another sea day, but we still had plenty to accomplish around the ship.
